Andrea Person is the Winter 2013 Scholarship Winner
Andrea Person will be starting her sophomore year of undergraduate study at George Mason University (GMU), located 18 miles west of Washington, DC, in Fairfax, Virginia. She is enrolled in the College of Health and Human Services, majoring in nursing.
In addition to being a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Andrea maintains a 3.4 cumulative grade point average and stays actively involved on campus through Leadership & Community Engagement, LLC. This program focuses on volunteering for social change issues such as health care, homelessness, animal welfare, and the environment. This past year alone, Andrea has participated in events such as the AIDS Walk and has helped to improve a local beach by rebuilding its fence. Through that same program, she met her favorite teacher, Wendy Wagner, who teaches leadership classes and is the director of the program. She made Andrea’s first year an easy transition into college life and inspired her to become a junior volunteer at her local hospital. When Andrea is not busy bettering her community, she enjoys baking, shopping, and all things fashion. During her sophomore year, she plans to join the GMU Fashion Society, which presents models and their new designs at runway shows throughout the year.
Andrea is originally from Chesapeake, Virginia, and has two older brothers and an older sister. She has always been interested in health services and will be the third member of her family to enter a healthcare-related career. Her mother and sister are both nurses, while her brother, her role model, just graduated from college. He was the first in the family to earn a college degree and recently sat for his Pharmacy College Admission Test. Andrea hopes to use her experience and expertise in the health field to develop a career in natal nursing somewhere near her family on the East Coast.
