SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (MARKET WIRE) — August 25, 2009 — Papercheck, a leader in editing and proofreading services, announced that the Winter 2008 Charles Shafaé Scholarship Fund winner is Shelby Olson, a junior at Pepperdine University.
Olson is currently pursuing a Liberal Arts program and is expected to complete her studies in 2011. After graduation, she plans to obtain her D.D.S. Her goal is to open a dental practice and start an outreach program to provide dental health services to families that cannot afford it.
“This scholarship is aimed at helping students such as Shelby fulfill their potential and strive for excellence,” said Darren Shafae, founder and vice president of Papercheck. “Shelby has already demonstrated success as a student, maintaining a 3.698 GPA and a dean’s list standing. She is sure to go on to make a real mark as a health care professional.”
Named in honor of Charles Shafaé, father of company founder Darren Shafae, the $500 scholarship is awarded twice annually. Charles Shafaé came to this country at 18 and struggled to pay for school. Through his determination to pursue his dreams, he graduated from Cal State University Hayward with a B.S. in Mathematics and an MBA. He is a successful businessman and entrepreneur.
Papercheck received over 110 submissions for the winter scholarship award. To be eligible, a student must be an undergraduate at an accredited four-year U.S. university or college, carry a status of “Good Standing,” and maintain at least a 3.2 GPA. Each scholarship winner must write an essay of at least 1,000 words on a subject selected by Papercheck. Essays are judged on grammar and content.
