Rebecca Lopez is the 2015 Scholarship Winner
Rebecca is currently a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania. She is majoring in Communications with an emphasis in public service and minoring in Hispanic studies. Rebecca has earned a cumulative GPA of 3.86 and was on the Dean’s List for the 2014-2015 school year.
Rebecca is originally from the Bronx, but she moved with her mom, dad, three brothers, and sister to New Jersey when she was in elementary school. She credits her hardworking parents for her enthusiasm in school and extracurricular undertakings. They have always supported and inspired her and her siblings to pursue their talents and education. Rebecca participates in an array of extracurricular activities, including playing the piccolo in the Penn Band, tutoring children through the Penn Music Mentoring program, performing community service with Circle K, helping inmates prepare for release with Books through Bars, reading to local kids in Magic Circle, raising money for cancer research with Relay for Life, and planning social and academic events with the Latin American Studies Undergraduate Assembly.
Rebecca was very appreciative and pleased to receive this year’s Charles Shafaé Scholarship Award. Her essay discussing the pros and cons of an online degree versus an on-site education was both provocative and well-written. She plans to continue her nonprofit work in public relations for Hispanic advocacy. Best of luck with your studies and with all your future endeavors, Rebecca.
